"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks to work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."
- Antoine de Saint Expuéry

Joanna Gottlob

Hi! My name is Joanna. I love seeing people do their best — it’s what gets me out of bed in the morning. I’ve studied music for three decades, in both classical and contemporary styles. I’ve played piano since I was six, and if you can put air through it, I’ve probably played it — in orchestra, jazz band, or a combo of some sort. I’ve also sung in and led various choirs, from mass choirs to small a cappella groups.I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, which I used to study history, theology, biology, leadership, and many other disciplines. I’ve been involved in ministry since birth. I grew up as a missionary kid and have served at camps, youth ministries, VBS, and alongside my parents in their lifelong ministry — working with people from many cultures, from English learners to PhDs and post-docs.I participated in — and even helped start — a youth missions trip program at my church. On the academic side, I’ve been tutoring for the past four years, working with everyone from small children to individuals with special needs to adults. If one approach doesn’t work, we try as many as necessary until we find the one that does. No question is a stupid question.

Music

If you want to learn piano, a wind instrument, voice or guitar, I'm your girl. I believe in strong fundamentals. I teach my students so that whatever music they take interest in, in whatever group they join, they have the ability to participate because music is meant to be shared. The thing about music is that anyone can learn. Sure, some people may come by it naturally, but at the end of the day, practice beats talent any day of the week, so do what you love!

Tutoring

I don't think that any one is dumb. I believe that everyone does their best and when they struggle, it's because they are just missing a piece of information, or something just needs to be explained differently. That's ok. We can work with that. I believe you work with the person where they are at. If one way you explain doesn't help, try another, and we do that as many times as we need to until the things you are trying to learn make sense. No question is unwelcome or stupid.
